Gift Ideas for Scuba Divers (And the One Gift They'll Actually Use)

The best gift for a diver is usually not more gear

The best gift for a diver is usually not more gear. Divers tend to have firm opinions about their own mask, their own computer and their own wetsuit brand, so guessing at equipment is a real chance of buying something that ends up in a drawer. What they will actually use is a dive, a course, or the chance to get certified with us for the first time.

A Dive Centre Bondi gift voucher puts that in someone's hands directly. Instead of another product to unwrap and store, the person on the receiving end gets a real Sydney dive experience they get to have. There are two ways to buy one: a gift card for one specific course or experience, or a flexible voucher they can put toward anything when you are not sure what they would choose. Both are covered in full further down, so whichever way you go, you will know exactly what you are buying before you check out.

This works just as well for a diver who has been in the water for twenty years as it does for someone who has never so much as tried on a mask. The next two sections cover both.

Give someone their first dive

If the person you are buying for has never dived before, the gift is not a thing, it is an introduction. Two options cover most people in this position, and which one fits depends on how sure they already are.

If they are curious but not sure diving is for them, a Discover Scuba Diving experience is the lower-commitment option. It is a supervised, confined-water taste of breathing underwater, run by one of our instructors, with no certification required to try it.

If they already know they want to learn properly, gift them the PADI Open Water Diver course. This is the certification that opens up diving anywhere in the world, and it is worth addressing the objection that stops a lot of people before they start: do they need to be a strong swimmer? Before certifying, they complete a comfort-in-water assessment, a swim or float and a longer surface swim, and neither one is timed. It is there to check they are comfortable in the water, not to test their fitness, and it is more reassuring in practice than most people expect.

We run the Open Water course over three days rather than two. That is a deliberate choice: more time in the water, more practice on each skill, and room for people who learn at different paces. The course is $895.

Once you have decided the Open Water course is the gift, you do not need to send them to a general voucher page at all. The course's own page has a "Buy Gift Card" option built into its booking widget, so you can gift that exact course directly, and the person you are giving it to picks their own start date when they are ready.

Gift an adventure for a diver who's already certified

For someone who already dives, the gift that lands best is usually the one experience they have not ticked off yet. Our standout for this is the Bushrangers Bay shark dive, a guided day trip south of Sydney to a marine reserve with a resident population of grey nurse sharks, a critically endangered species protected in NSW waters.

This one is only for divers who are already certified (a PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent, and dived within the last 12 months), so it is worth checking before you buy it as a surprise. Sightings are common but never guaranteed, since these are wild animals in open water, not an aquarium. The standard trip is $345, all-inclusive of transport and a full set of equipment. For a fuller picture of what the day actually involves, see what to expect on a Bushrangers Bay shark dive.

Just like the Open Water course, you do not need to route this through a general voucher. The Bushrangers Bay page has its own "Buy Gift Card" option, so you can gift a Bushrangers Bay shark dive experience directly, and the recipient chooses their own trip date when they are ready to go, which matters for a day trip with a fixed group departure.

If a shark dive feels like too big a swing, a guided shore dive, an Advanced Open Water course or a specialty course are all lower-cost ways to gift a diver their next step, and each one can be gifted the same way, directly from its own page.

Two ways to buy a gift

There are two ways to buy a Dive Centre Bondi gift, and picking between them comes down to one question: do you already know what they would want?

Know exactly what they'd want? Buy a gift card for that specific course or experience, straight from its own page (the Open Water course, a Bushrangers Bay shark dive, Advanced Open Water and more all work this way). The recipient picks their own date or session later, when they redeem it.

Not sure, or want to leave it open? Buy a general voucher from Dive Centre Bondi instead. It is valid for three years, so there is no pressure to use it right away, and it can be put toward any course, guided dive or gear purchase in that time. It is also transferable, so if the person you give it to cannot use it, they can pass it on to someone who will.

Specific experience General voucher
Best for You know exactly what they'd want You're not sure, or want to leave it open
Where to buy The course or experience's own page Buy a gift voucher
Redeemable on That one course or experience Any course, guided dive or gear purchase

Both the general voucher and the gift-card option on individual pages are available as a digital voucher, delivered by email in minutes for a last-minute gift, or as a physical gift card in a presentation wallet, available in-store, for something to actually wrap. Either format works well for a birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's or Father's Day, a graduation, an anniversary, or a corporate gift for a team.

A few physical gifts worth giving too

If a voucher still feels like it needs a physical item alongside it, or the person you are buying for has asked for something they can unwrap, a few things are genuinely worth giving rather than guessing at from a catalogue:

  • A dive mask, fitted properly rather than ordered online (see our pick of the best scuba masks)
  • A dive computer, for someone still diving on a rented one
  • A dive torch, useful for night dives, wreck penetration and just seeing true colour underwater
  • A surface marker buoy (SMB), a genuinely useful safety item most divers mean to buy and never quite do
  • A dive log book, for someone just starting to build up their logged dives
  • Wetsuit accessories such as a hood, gloves or boots, sized to fit

We would rather talk you through a proper fit than sell you the wrong item, so come in and try one before you buy. It is one advantage of buying from a shop you can actually walk into.

Gift voucher FAQ

How long are Dive Centre Bondi gift vouchers valid for?
Three years from purchase, so there is no pressure to use it right away. If the recipient is not ready to dive yet, it will still be valid when they are.

What can a Dive Centre Bondi gift voucher be used for?
Any course, guided dive or gear purchase at Dive Centre Bondi, from a Discover Scuba Diving session through to the PADI Open Water course, a Bushrangers Bay shark dive, or equipment in-store.

Can I buy a gift card for one specific course or experience instead of a general voucher?
Yes. Every course and activity page has its own "Buy Gift Card" option, so you can gift, say, the Open Water course or a Bushrangers Bay shark dive directly, and the recipient chooses their own date when they redeem it.

Can I transfer the voucher to someone else?
Yes. Vouchers are not locked to one name, so if your original recipient cannot use it, they can pass it on to someone who will.

What is the difference between a digital and a physical gift card?
A digital voucher is emailed instantly, which suits a last-minute gift. A physical card is a branded Dive Centre Bondi card in a presentation wallet, available in-store, for something to actually wrap.

Does the recipient need any diving experience to use the voucher?
No. Vouchers work for complete beginners, a Discover Scuba Diving session or the Open Water course, as well as certified divers booking guided dives, advanced courses or a Bushrangers Bay shark dive.

What value should I buy?
If you know which course or experience they would want, buy a gift card for that exact activity. If you are not sure, a flexible open-value voucher lets them decide for themselves.

However you choose to give it, whether that is a gift card for one specific experience or a flexible voucher, it hands someone a real Sydney dive experience, not another guess at gear. If you are ready to help someone learn to dive in Sydney, come in and talk to us, or buy online, and we will help you get it right.
