Our PADI Open Water Diver course is designed for complete beginners: no experience needed, just a sense of adventure and a willingness to get wet. What Is the PADI Open Water Diver Course?
The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world's most widely recognised scuba diving certification, and it's the perfect entry point for anyone who wants to learn to dive. Completing the course means you'll be qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres at dive sites around the globe, with a buddy and without an instructor holding your hand.
The course covers everything you need: dive theory (done at your own pace via PADI's eLearning platform before the course starts), confined water skills in a pool, and open water dives in Sydney's real ocean environment.

What Does the 3-Day PADI Open Water Course Look Like?
Day 1 — Pool day, building your foundations
A full day in the pool with your instructor. You'll practise all the core skills (breathing underwater, mask clearing, buoyancy control, regulator recovery) until they feel completely natural. By the end of the day you'll be moving through the water with real confidence.
Day 2 — Open water dives 1 and 2
Time to take those skills into Sydney's ocean. You'll complete your first two open water dives, putting everything you've learned into practice in a real dive environment. Expect marine life, clear water, and a large sense of achievement.
Day 3 — Open water dives 3 and 4, and you're certified
Two more ocean dives to consolidate your skills and enjoy the experience. By the end of day 3 you'll be a fully certified PADI Open Water Diver, qualified to dive to 18 m anywhere in the world.
Sydney's reefs are full of colour and life, and your open water dives take you right into the middle of it.
Who Is the PADI Open Water Course For?
Anyone who is comfortable in the water and in reasonable health. You don't need to be a strong swimmer or have any diving experience. The minimum age is 15, or 10 for the Junior Open Water Diver certification. There is no upper age limit.
There is a swim assessment, and it is worth knowing that neither part of it is timed: a 10-minute float, and either a 200 metre swim or a 300 metre swim with mask, fins and snorkel. It is a comfort-in-water assessment, not a fitness test.
Whether you're a backpacker looking for your first dive experience in Sydney, a local who's always been curious, or someone who wants to take up diving seriously, this is where it starts.
Before the in-water days begin you'll complete the theory via PADI's eLearning platform, a series of online modules and quizzes you work through at home at your own pace. By the time you arrive on day 1 you'll already have the knowledge base you need.

Where Will You Dive in Sydney?
Your open water dives take place at some of Sydney's best sites, chosen for their marine life, conditions and suitability for new divers. Sydney's coastline offers a remarkable variety: kelp-draped rocky reefs, open sandy slopes, and sites known for blue gropers, cuttlefish, nudibranchs and the occasional wobbegong resting on the bottom.
Once you're certified, a whole network of Sydney dive sites opens up to you. And beyond Sydney, your PADI Open Water certification gives you the freedom to dive anywhere in the world, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Red Sea.
