Dive Centre Bondi Named a PADI Platinum Level Five Star IDC Center — One of Only Two in Australia

Dive Centre Bondi — PADI Platinum Level Five Star IDC Center, Sydney.

We have some very big news to share with Sydney's diving community, and with every traveller thinking about where in Australia to learn to dive: Dive Centre Bondi has been awarded Platinum Level Five Star IDC Center recognition under the PADI Asia Pacific Professional Development Excellence Award.

It is the highest tier of recognition PADI Asia Pacific gives, and it has just been awarded to only two dive centres in the whole of Australia. Dive Centre Bondi is the only Platinum-recognised dive centre in New South Wales.

For us, this is a milestone years in the making. But if you're a diver planning a trip to Sydney — or about to book your very first Open Water course — the more useful question is: what does this actually mean for you?

What is the PADI Asia Pacific Professional Development Excellence Award?

PADI (the Professional Association of Diving Instructors) is the world's largest diver training organisation. This year, PADI Asia Pacific launched a brand-new recognition programme — the Professional Development Excellence Award — to formally recognise the Five Star Instructor Development Centers across the region that are doing the heavy lifting of training the next generation of PADI Professionals.

There are four levels, from entry up to the top:

  • Bronze — foundational commitment to professional development.
  • Silver — consistent development and growing impact.
  • Gold — expanded capability and strong professional output.
  • Platinum — elite training performance and proven leadership.

Platinum is not a participation award. In PADI's own words, Platinum centres "operate at the top tier of professional development performance" and "signal authority, credibility and leadership within the industry." To qualify, a dive shop has to deliver 100+ total credits, 30 Pro Core certifications (including at least six OWSI ratings), and 70 Pro Continuing Education specialties — in the reporting period. Not ever. In one year.

That is a very high bar. It is why, across the whole of Australia, only two shops made it — you can see the full list of awarded PADI Five Star IDC Centers across Asia Pacific here.

Why this matters if you're choosing a dive shop in Sydney

When you Google "best dive shop Sydney" or "learn to dive Bondi", everything looks the same on the surface. Similar prices. Similar photos. Similar promises. As a new diver, you have almost no way of knowing which shops take teaching seriously and which ones are just churning certifications.

The PADI Platinum Level Five Star IDC Center rating exists to solve exactly that problem. It is the single best trust-mark the scuba industry has — and here is why it matters for you as a student, even if you have zero interest in ever becoming an instructor:

  • The same team, systems, and standards that train brand-new PADI Instructors are the ones teaching your Open Water, Advanced, or Rescue course.
  • The centre has been independently assessed by PADI on training quality, customer service, dive safety, and professional output.
  • Instructors are trained, mentored, and standardised in-house — so the teaching culture filters all the way down to entry-level courses.
  • Ongoing professional development isn't optional. It is audited.

In other words, the Platinum badge is shorthand for: this shop is being held to the highest teaching standard PADI applies — and passing.

What's behind our Platinum recognition

Earning Platinum Level recognition isn't about volume. It's about what you do with it. A few of the things that got us here:

A 100% first-attempt pass rate on the PADI Instructor Examination. Every single candidate trained by our Course Director has passed the PADI IE on their first attempt. That isn't an accident — it's the product of how the course is designed.

A multi-Platinum Course Director. Our Course Director, Woody Lammar, holds multiple Platinum PADI awards — a recognition held by only a handful of instructor trainers worldwide. The same person who has trained PADI Professionals across the industry is setting the standard on our teaching floor.

Neutral-buoyancy training, end-to-end. Every skill — from mask clear to deep dive planning — is trained in neutral buoyancy, which is the modern professional standard. Students learn to dive without kneeling on the sand, which translates into better buoyancy, better trim, and a much lower impact on the reef. This applies to Open Water students too, not just pros.

Small classes. A maximum of five candidates per IDC class, and similarly small ratios throughout our recreational courses. You get coached, not processed.

Video feedback on every skill. Students review their own underwater performance on video with their instructor. It's a modern coaching method that turns abstract feedback into something you can actually see — and fix.

Those are the habits of an elite training centre. And because the same instructors who run the IDC also run our Open Water and Advanced courses, those habits are what you get on day one.

Sydney is one of the world's most underrated dive destinations

People fly past Sydney on their way to the Great Barrier Reef. It is one of diving's open secrets that Sydney has some of the best temperate diving on the planet, right at our doorstep:

  • North Bondi — one of the best shore dives in Sydney, famous for the Cathedral swim-through, schooling fish, massive bullrays and wobbegong sharks.
  • Gordons Bay — Sydney's most famous shore dive, home to an incredible variety of nudibranchs, blue gropers, cuttlefish and an underwater nature trail.
  • Camp Cove — a calm, protected Sydney Harbour dive site loved by students for its easy entry and relaxed conditions.
  • Bare Island, La Perouse — one of the great critter dives in Australia — wobbegong sharks, anglerfish, pygmy pipehorses and nudibranchs.
  • Bushrangers Bay — our grey nurse shark dive, with guaranteed encounters in season and one of the best shark experiences on the east coast.

Combine that with a Platinum-recognised dive shop on Bondi Road, and Sydney becomes a genuine training destination. Fly in, stay a week or two walking distance from the shop, and leave with a stack of real dives, a certification card, and a logbook full of experiences you won't find anywhere else in the world.
