Halcyon Defender Pro Reel

Be seen the moment you surface

Sydney has boat traffic, and surfacing away from your entry point is normal here — current at Bare Island, a longer-than-planned swim at Magic Point. An SMB is what makes you visible from a boat, and it's mandatory kit on most of our guided and technical dives.

A closed-circuit SMB holds gas once it's on the surface and is the standard for decompression diving; an open-bottom SMB is simpler and cheaper for recreational use. We'll tell you which one you actually need.

Deploying an SMB cleanly from depth is a skill. We teach it in Advanced Open Water and GUE Fundamentals — and it's worth practising before the day you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our gear, courses, and policies.

What colour SMB is best?

Pink. It reads from much further away on the surface than traditional orange or yellow, particularly in chop or low light. The Halcyon pink SMBs are what we would point you at.

Should I get an orally inflated SMB or one I fill from my regulator?

We prefer orally inflated. Filling from an inflator hose or a regulator makes it easier to get dragged up with the SMB, and an uncontrolled ascent is a far bigger problem than the extra second it takes to blow it up.

Closed or open circuit?

A closed-circuit SMB holds gas once it is on the surface and is the standard for decompression diving. An open-bottom SMB is simpler and cheaper and is fine for recreational use. Tell us how you dive and we will tell you which one you actually need.

Do I need to know how to deploy it?

Yes — deploying an SMB cleanly from depth is a skill, and the time to learn it is not the day you need it. We teach it in Advanced Open Water and in GUE Fundamentals.
