Course Overview

Tec Basics is a two-day program that introduces certified divers to the fundamentals of technical diving. You will learn to configure and dive technical equipment in single or double cylinder setup, master the long-hose configuration, valve drills, precision buoyancy and trim, and advanced propulsion techniques — all while developing the team protocols and mindset that technical diving demands.

The course is the ideal preparation for Tec 40 and a valuable skills upgrade for any diver who wants to dive with more control and confidence. It is taught to full PADI TecRec Tec Basics standards by a certified PADI Tec Instructor, with a maximum student-to-instructor ratio of 3:1.

Course Specifications

  • Max depth: 24 m / 79 ft
  • Gases: Air or enriched air up to EANx 40
  • Decompression: No-stop diving only (simulated decompression training)
  • Equipment: Single / Sidemount / Doubles — redundancy required. Deco cylinder optional (18 years and over).
  • Key skills: Trim and buoyancy mastery, advanced propulsion, shutdown drills, DSMB deployment, team procedures

Certification Pathway

After successful completion of your Tec Basics training, we can discuss your next steps within the PADI TecRec pathway, including:

  • Tec 40 — your first decompression diving qualification
  • Tec 45 — extend depth and full decompression
  • Tec 50 — multi-gas and extended deco
  • Rec and/or Tec Sidemount Diver

Day 1

WORKSHOP + CONFINED WATER

Course presentation on tec diving fundamentals, equipment standards and team procedures. Equipment configuration workshop for single or double cylinder setup and long-hose primary/valve operation. Dry-skills practice: valve shutdown drills, gas sharing, propulsion techniques (frog kick, modified frog kick, back kick, helicopter turns) and team descent/ascent sequences. Dive 1 — Confined water training at 10m: trim and buoyancy, hovering, regulator recovery, mask skills, shutdown drills, out-of-gas protocols, DSMB deployment and a simulated deco stop.

Day 2

OPEN WATER — SKILLS APPLICATION

Dive planning briefing covering gases, turn pressures, time and depth limits and contingencies. Dives 2 & 3 — Open water dives at 10–24m covering the full skills sequence: gas sharing swim, trim and buoyancy work, propulsion refinement, shutdown drills, DSMB deployment and an ascent with a 5-minute simulated deco stop. Final debrief, skill sign-offs and PADI Tec Basics certification issued.

What's the difference between Tec Basics and Tec 40?
Tec Basics stays within no-stop limits — it's a skills and equipment foundation with no decompression obligation. Tec 40 is where you start planning and executing real limited decompression dives.
Do I need my own technical equipment?
You should have your own equipment where possible (see Equipment Requirements below) — cylinders and weights are included, and hire may be available if you contact us in advance.
What's the maximum class size?
A maximum of 3 students per instructor, so coaching stays personal and tailored to you.
Can I book a private course instead?
Yes — private training is available for $2,085. Get in touch and we'll arrange dates around you.
What if I need to reschedule?
Rescheduling is free as long as it's more than 7 days before your course starts. Inside 7 days there's a $100 transfer fee — by that point we've already committed your instructor, your equipment and the logistics for those dates.
Is Tec Basics required before Tec 40?
It isn't a formal PADI prerequisite, but it's the ideal lead-in if you want to arrive at Tec 40 already comfortable with technical equipment and trim.
