The full timeline to becoming a divemaster

The divemaster program is the first step into the world of dive professionals. Here's how the journey looks with us:

  1. Open Water Diver — your foundation. A 3-day course covering the fundamentals, $895. If you haven't done this yet, we can get you started right away.
  2. Advanced Open Water — a 2-day course that deepens your skills and takes you to new dive sites around Sydney. Included in the package.
  3. First aid certification — a valid first aid certification is required before starting the Divemaster course. This is a PADI requirement. Don't have one? We can point you in the right direction.
  4. Rescue Diver — two days of the most important training a diver can have. Rescue skills underpin everything a professional divemaster does. Included in the package.
  5. Build to 40 logged dives — you need 40 dives before starting the Divemaster course. We make this affordable with an in-training dive rate of $50 per dive.
  6. Divemaster training over two consecutive weekends — the core of the program. Four intensive days of practical application: swim exercises, pool teaching skills, divemaster workshops, and understanding your role as a dive professional.
  7. Assisting on courses and leading dives — the most flexible part. After your initial weekends you assist on as many courses as you like. Complete this phase in as little as six weeks, or spread it over a year.

Once you complete all components you hold the globally recognised PADI Divemaster certification.

Worth knowing: the standard is 40 logged dives to begin the course and 60 to complete it. In practice most of our candidates finish somewhere between 60 and 80 dives, which sets them up well if they go on to the instructor pathway.

Dive every day: our internship model

One of the things that sets our divemaster internship apart is how much time you spend in the water. During the course you can assist on as many dives and courses as you want, completely free. The more available you are, the more experience you gain, and the faster you progress.

Want to build up your 40 dives before the course? Our in-training dive rate is $50 per dive, compared with the standard $195.

Pricing: the Divemaster course and the all-in package

The PADI Divemaster course alone is $1,645. That covers the full program: both training weekends, all practical assessments, pool sessions, open water work, and your internship. Cylinders, tanks and weights are included throughout.

Already have your Open Water but need to work your way up? The package bundles every course you'll need:

$2,645 for the lot, plus a $200 gift voucher. Already Advanced? It's $2,140 with a $100 gift voucher.

We understand this is a significant investment. As a working PADI Divemaster in Sydney you can earn between $250 and $350 per day, so the course cost can be recouped in as little as 5 to 7 working days. We're also proud to be one of the highest-paying dive centres in Australia, and for graduates who join our team that earning potential starts immediately.

A community, not just a course

What makes our divemaster program different isn't the credentials or the package price, it's the culture. From your first day as a trainee you're part of the Dive Centre Bondi family. You dive with our team, assist alongside our instructors, and get to know the regular divers and newer students. By the time you certify you'll have built real relationships and real confidence.
