Sydney is one of the world's great scuba diving cities — and Dive Centre Bondi sits right in the middle of it all. Minutes from Bondi Beach, we run guided shore dives, shark dives, night dives and PADI courses at Sydney's most spectacular Eastern Suburbs dive sites. Dramatic rocky reefs, sea caves, kelp forests and sandy gutters teeming with marine life — this is what diving in Sydney looks like.
Why Sydney Surprises Every Diver
Most people don't realise how spectacular the diving is in Sydney until they get underwater for the first time. The city's temperate waters host an incredibly diverse marine ecosystem — a mix of kelp forests, rocky reefs, sea caves and sandy gutters that changes completely depending on where and when you dive.
Sydney's Eastern Suburbs coastline — from Bondi to Malabar and beyond — offers a string of world-class dive sites within easy reach of the city. Visibility regularly reaches 10–15 metres on good days, and the water ranges from around 17°C in winter to 23°C in summer. Our team always dives in quality 7mm wetsuits, keeping you comfortable and warm for as long as you want to stay down.
What makes Sydney diving truly special is the marine life. Grey nurse sharks, Port Jackson sharks, wobbegong sharks, giant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, massive bull rays and enormous blue groper — all within 30 minutes of the CBD.
Bushrangers Bay — Dive with Grey Nurse Sharks
Bushrangers Bay on the NSW South Coast is one of Australia's most famous shark dive destinations. This protected marine sanctuary is home to resident aggregations of grey nurse sharks — a gentle, inquisitive species that allows divers to get remarkably close. Dive Centre Bondi runs regular guided Shore Dive trips to Bushrangers Bay direct from Sydney. If swimming with sharks is on your bucket list, this is the one.

Gordon's Bay
Tucked between Coogee and Clovelly, Gordon's Bay is one of Sydney's most loved shore dive sites. Rocky reef, sea caves and an underwater nature trail make this a favourite for all levels. Resident blue groper, octopus and Port Jackson sharks resting on the sandy bottom are almost guaranteed.

Shark Point, Clovelly
One of Sydney's most iconic dive sites, Shark Point offers dramatic underwater topography and consistently excellent marine life. Expect wobbegong sharks perfectly camouflaged on the reef, giant cuttlefish, eagle rays and massive schools of fish sweeping past the point. Best suited to Advanced Open Water certified divers due to the site's depth and current.
Camp Cove — Our Training Dive Site
Sheltered, clear and calm, Camp Cove in Watson's Bay is where our students complete their first open water dives. This protected bay offers excellent visibility, gentle conditions and friendly marine life — perfect for building confidence underwater. Port Jackson sharks, wrasse and small rays are common sightings here.
Bare Island, La Perouse
Bare Island is one of Sydney's most rewarding shore dives. Sitting at the end of a historic footbridge at La Perouse, the site is prolific with marine life — nudibranchs, moray eels, seahorses, Port Jackson sharks and the occasional weedy sea dragon. The varied terrain of rock ledges, sandy gutters and kelp beds makes every dive different. Accessible for all certified divers.

Right on our doorstep, North Bondi reef is one of Sydney's most rewarding dives. The famous "Cathedral" — a dramatic swimthrough typically packed with Port Jackson sharks — is one of the most photographed dive sites in the city. Best dived at high slack tide.
North Bondi is also renowned for its resident massive bull ray that cruises the sandy flats and reef edges on most dives. Grey nurse sharks are regularly spotted here too, making North Bondi one of the few Sydney sites where you can encounter them on a shore dive. Keep your eyes on the blue.

For Advanced Open Water certified divers, Shark Point is the standout Eastern Suburbs site — dramatic topography, strong currents and massive schools of fish that sweep past the point in season. The site rewards those who put in the time with consistently spectacular encounters. It's a regular on our advanced guided dive calendar and never dives the same way twice.
Weedy sea dragons — one of Australia's most beautiful and unique marine creatures — are regularly found at Bare Island and Kurnell. If spotting a weedy sea dragon is on your dive wish list, these are the sites to visit.

Sydney's dive sites transform completely after dark. Night diving reveals an entirely different world — octopus emerge from their dens to hunt, nudibranchs appear on the reef in vivid colours, and the water shimmers with bioluminescence. Our guided night dives run from sites including Bare Island, Clovelly and Gordon's Bay, and are open to certified divers of all experience levels.

Book a Night DiveHMAS Adelaide — Wreck Diving off the NSW Coast
The HMAS Adelaide is one of Australia's most iconic dive wrecks. Deliberately sunk in 2011 off Avoca Beach on the NSW Central Coast, this former Royal Australian Navy frigate lies in 32 metres. The wreck is encrusted with soft coral, sponges and marine life, and attracts large schools of fish. For certified technical divers, the interior penetration dives are among the most rewarding in NSW — a natural extension of the GUE technical diving training we offer at Dive Centre Bondi.

Best Time to Dive in Sydney
Sydney diving is rewarding year-round. Each season brings something different:
Autumn & Winter (Apr–Aug)
Visibility is at its peak — often exceeding 15 metres. Port Jackson sharks arrive in May to breed, and humpback whales begin their northward migration past Sydney's Eastern Suburbs coast. Water temperature drops to 17–18°C — our 7mm wetsuits keep you comfortable for the whole dive.
Spring (Sep–Nov)
Water warms up, marine life becomes more active and conditions are consistently excellent. Port Jackson sharks are still around as they head south, and visibility remains strong. One of the best times of year to explore Sydney's reef systems with long, comfortable dives.
Summer (Dec–Mar)
Warm water (21–23°C) and abundant marine life make summer a fantastic time to dive in Sydney. Ideal for beginners and great for underwater photography. Our 7mm wetsuits ensure you stay warm and can extend your bottom time to enjoy everything the reefs have to offer.
Whale Season (May–Nov)
During humpback whale migration, pods move directly past Sydney's Eastern Suburbs coast. It's not uncommon to hear whale song underwater, and surface sightings during the surface intervals make this one of the most magical times of year to be in the water off Sydney.
