Why Take This Course?

This is a limited decompression course structured to teach advanced diving skills, prepare divers for using decompression cylinders with double tanks, and to breathe helium-based mixtures appropriate for deeper recreational dives to 40 metres.

Training runs from Dee Why Ferry, Sydney, combining lecture presentations, land drills, confined water training, and a minimum of eight dives — including two trimix experience dives.

The course fee covers instruction and rental of any major equipment. Boat charter and gas fills (nitrox and trimix) are billed separately at cost, and the GUE Registration Fee is paid separately via the GUE website.

After successfully completing your training dives, you'll be a certified GUE Master Diver (Recreational Diver Level 3), safely able to dive to a maximum of 40 metres and conduct limited decompression.

Day 1

THEORY + DIVING

Introduction, equipment configuration, land drills on regulator failures and team scenarios. Two dives to put it all into practice. Depth 10m

Day 2

LAND DRILLS + TRAINING DIVES

Doubles configuration and decompression cylinder use, gas switching, valve and manifold failures, gas sharing and ascents. Depth 10m

Days 3-4

DEEPER ASCENTS

Boat dives working on SMB deployment, ascent procedures and managing decompression bottle failures, plus gas planning theory. Depth 30m

Day 5

EXPERIENCE DIVES

Plan real decompression dives and execute them with supervision and feedback from your GUE instructor. Max depth 40m

All major pieces of equipment are included in the course cost — twin regulator sets, a backplate & harness, rigid single-bladed fins, and twin tanks & weights.

You're expected to own or purchase your own mask, backup mask, surface marker buoy, spool and wetnotes.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 18.
  • Physically and mentally fit.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Obtain a physician's prior written authorisation for use of prescription drugs (except birth control), or for any medical condition that may pose a risk while diving.
  • Certified as a GUE Advanced Open Water Diver (Rec 2), or a GUE Basic Fundamentals diver.
  • At least 25 non-training dives following completion of that certification.
  • At least 75 non-training dives following completion of autonomous scuba diver certification.
  • If using doubles during the course: at least 15 non-training dives in the GUE double-tank configuration, or 10 following a GUE Doubles Primer certification.
  • If using a drysuit during the course: at least 15 non-training dives in a drysuit, or 10 following a GUE Drysuit Primer certification.
  • Able to swim 275 metres (300 yards) in under 14 minutes without stopping.
  • Able to swim 15 metres (50 feet) underwater on a single breath.

Is this the same course as Rec 3?
Yes. GUE Master Diver is the full name for what many divers still call Rec 3 — GUE writes it as Master Diver (Recreational Diver Level 3). Same course, same certification.
What's included in the price?
The $1,750 instructor fee covers instruction and rental of major equipment. Boat charter and gas fills (nitrox and trimix) are billed separately at cost — typically $1,000–$1,500 depending on charter fees and gas used. The GUE Registration Fee is paid separately via the GUE website.
How long is the course?
Five days, with a minimum of 8 dives and 40+ hours of instruction — either five consecutive days or built around a schedule that works for your group.
What are the prerequisites?
Minimum age 18, certified as a GUE Advanced Open Water Diver (Rec 2) or GUE Basic Fundamentals, at least 75 logged non-training dives with at least 25 since that certification, at least 15 dives in double tanks (or GUE Doubles Primer plus 10), physically and mentally fit, a non-smoker, and medical clearance. What depth will I be certified to?
A maximum of 40 metres, with limited decompression.
