Why Take This Course?

Ocean exploration at greater depths reveals a variety of hidden treasures — deep pristine reefs, well-preserved wrecks, and valuable historical artefacts. Venturing deeper carries inherent risks that can be mitigated with proper training, knowledge, teamwork, and gradual experience.

The GUE Tech 1 Course prepares ambitious divers to begin their path to technical diving safely, with confidence, and a solid base of skills and knowledge. It also paves the way to GUE rebreather courses, advanced technical GUE training, and GUE project and exploration diving.

After successfully completing your training dives, you'll be a certified GUE Technical Diver 1, safely able to dive to a maximum of 51 metres and conduct accelerated decompression.

Day 1

THEORY + DIVING

Equipment configuration, land drills and regulator failures, then two dives to put it all into practice as a team. Depth 10m

Day 2

LAND DRILLS + TRAINING DIVES

Gas switching drills, valve and manifold failures, gas sharing and teamwork, plus gas properties and helium theory. Depth 10m

Days 3-4

DEEPER ASCENTS

SMB deployment, ascent training, contingency planning and managing decompression bottle failures as a team. Depth 30m

Days 5-6

EXPERIENCE DIVES

Plan real technical dives and execute them with supervision and feedback from your GUE instructor. Max depth 51m

You're expected to own or purchase your own mask, backup mask, surface marker buoy, spool and wetnotes.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 18.
  • Physically and mentally fit.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Obtain a physician's prior written authorisation for use of prescription drugs (except birth control), or for any medical condition that may pose a risk while diving.
  • Certified as a GUE Technical Fundamentals diver.
  • At least 100 non-training dives following completion of autonomous scuba diver certification.
  • If using a drysuit during the course: at least 25 non-training dives in a drysuit, or 15 following a GUE Drysuit Primer certification.
  • GUE Rescue Primer, or an equivalent rescue certification from a recognised training agency, must be completed before your Tech 1 certification is issued.
  • Able to swim 365 metres (400 yards) in under 14 minutes without stopping.
  • Able to swim 18 metres (60 feet) underwater on a single breath.

How do I book this course?
Book and pay your $1000 deposit to reserve your place — courses are limited to a maximum of three divers.
What's included in the price?
The $2,100 instructor fee covers lecture presentations, land drills, confined water training, a minimum of seven dives including three trimix experience dives, and all major equipment except your personal kit. Boat charter and gas fills (oxygen and helium) are billed separately at cost — typically $1,000–$1,500 depending on charter fees and gas used. You'll need your own mask, backup mask, SMB, spool, and wetnotes.
How long is the course?
Six days — either six straight days for visiting divers, or built around a schedule that works for your group.
What are the prerequisites?
Minimum age 18, a GUE Technical Fundamentals certification, at least 100 non-training dives, medical clearance, and GUE's swim tests (365m in under 14 minutes and 18m underwater on a breath hold). GUE Rescue Primer or equivalent is required before certification is issued. See the full prerequisites above.
What's the maximum class size?
Courses are limited to a maximum of three divers.

Yes. GUE certifications are recognised by dive operators and technical diving communities worldwide.
