Why Take This Course?

Being a diver means exploring new underwater territories, and with an underwater scooter (DPV) the exploration range can expand even further. Riding a scooter is not only fun, but it also lets you cover more distance with less effort, even while carrying extra gear.

GUE's DPV Level 1 course introduces divers to the skills and knowledge required to safely use Diver Propulsion Vehicles in open water — covering dive planning, teamwork, environmental and conservation awareness, stress management, navigation, standard and emergency procedures, DPV maintenance and troubleshooting, and the hazards of diving with a DPV.

Day 1

THEORY + IN-WATER SKILLS

Introduction to DPVs, pre-dive checks and GUE-specific procedures. Two dives focusing on static and dynamic DPV skills.

Day 2

IN-WATER TRAINING

Dive planning theory, then two dives covering team techniques, towing and recovery, failure and runaway-scooter protocols and speed measuring.

Day 3

EXPERIENCE DIVE

Plan and execute a longer DPV dive with supervision, then a full post-dive debrief and feedback from your GUE instructor.

Equipment

All major pieces of equipment are included in the course cost, including the DPV, regulators, backplate & wing, rigid single-bladed fins, tanks and weights.

You're expected to own or purchase your own mask, backup mask, surface marker buoy, spool and wetnotes.

As a GUE student, you also unlock a 15% discount off most equipment items in store.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 16.
  • Physically and mentally fit.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Able to swim.
  • Obtain a physician's prior written authorisation for use of prescription drugs (except birth control), or for any medical condition that may pose a risk while diving.
  • Hold a GUE Open Water Diver, GUE Performance Diver or GUE Basic Fundamentals certification.
  • At least 25 non-training dives following completion of that certification.
  • At least 75 non-training dives following completion of autonomous scuba diver certification.
  • If using doubles during the course: at least 15 non-training dives in the GUE double-tank configuration, or 10 following a GUE Doubles Primer certification.
  • If using a drysuit during the course: at least 15 non-training dives in a drysuit, or 10 following a GUE Drysuit Primer certification.

What's included in the price?
All major equipment — DPV, regulators, backplate & wing, fins, tanks & weights. You'll need to bring your own mask, backup mask, SMB, spool, and wetnotes. Note: the GUE Registration Fee (USD$95) is separate, paid via the GUE website.
How long is the course?
Normally three days, with a minimum of 5 dives and at least 24 hours of instruction (theory, land drills, and in-water work) — either three consecutive days or a schedule built around you.
What are the prerequisites?
Minimum age 16, a GUE Open Water Diver, GUE Performance Diver or GUE Basic Fundamentals certification with at least 25 non-training dives since, at least 75 non-training dives overall, plus doubles and drysuit experience if you use them on the course. See the full prerequisites above.
