Find Sydney's weedy sea dragons
Dive The Steps at Kurnell in Kamay Botany Bay National Park, one of the best places in the world to see weedy sea dragons.
Weedy sea dragons live only in southern Australian waters. Your guide knows where they like to hang out and will help you find them while giving them the space they need.
Expect colourful sponge gardens and plenty of other marine life along the way.
Small groups only: max five certified divers per guide.
Meet at Dive Centre Bondi (8am weekends, 9am weekdays). Two guided shore dives, back by around 3pm.
Condition dependent: The Steps is exposed to swell, so we only dive there when conditions are good. If we can't go, you can reschedule or join our Guided Shore Dive at a more sheltered site and we'll refund the price difference.

How do I book?
Pick a date on the booking widget, complete the form, and you'll receive a confirmation email.
What's included in the price?
The guide and transportation. You can select any additional equipment rental during the booking process.
Do I need certification?
Yes. You need Open Water (or higher) certification and to have been diving in the last 12 months. Bring your card and logbook on the day.
What happens if conditions at The Steps aren't good enough?
The Steps is exposed to swell, so it's condition dependent. If we can't go, you can reschedule to another date or join our regular Guided Shore Dive at a more sheltered site that day, and we'll refund the price difference.
Are we guaranteed to see a weedy sea dragon?
They're wild animals, so we can't guarantee it, but The Steps is one of the most reliable places in the world to find them and our guides know where to look.
Can I photograph the sea dragons?
Absolutely. Please don't touch them or use bright strobes up close, and give them plenty of space. Your guide will brief you on how to approach them.
What if I need to reschedule?
Rescheduling is free as long as it's more than 72 hours before your dive. Inside 72 hours there's a $50 transfer fee.
I want to do this privately, or with just my friends. Can that be done?
Yes! We run private dives for individuals and groups when the scheduled dates don't line up with your availability. Get in touch and we'll arrange one for you.
Where should we park?
Ocean Street North is your best bet: free parking all day, a short walk from the dive centre. From there you can come with us to Kurnell or take your own car.
Can I use my own vehicle?
Definitely. Meet us at the dive centre to get fitted for your equipment and we'll transport it to the site and back for you. If you drive yourself you can head off straight from the dive site.
I don't have a dive buddy. Is that okay?
Absolutely. We'll pair you with another diver in the group or with the instructor running the session.
I don't have any equipment. Can I still join?
Yes. We have a big range of scuba equipment available for you to use.
